While living in Richmond, Virginia, from 1960 to 1971, I was primarily interested in diesel locomotives and thus missed many photographic opportunities of a historical nature. When career and children's education caused me to move to South Carolina in 1971, I began to take a greater interest in railroad operations and railroad photography.
This book fills a 25-year desire to present a work about Seaboard Coast Line. The merger of Atlantic Coast Line and Seaboard Air Line created Seaboard Coast Line in 1967. The history of this merger is well known to railroad enthusiasts, but SCL has not appeared very much in print compared to many other railroads. The only significant book about SCL, Seaboard Coast Line in Florida-A Pictorial History, by Bob Warren and Fred Clark, Jr., was published in 1985.
This book is neither an in-depth financial history of the Seaboard Coast Line, nor is it an in-depth look at SCL locomotives. Rather, it is an overview of the formation of Seaboard Coast Line, Family Lines, and Seaboard System.
It provides railroad enthusiasts with a close look at equipment, facilities, and operations of this important southeastern railroad, at selected locations, in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s.
After 19711 was seriously interested in observing the operations of SCL, particularly around Charleston, South Carolina, but also spent considerable time in North Carolina. Most of my photography was in color as I traded slides with many other railroad enthusiasts across the country.
Two of the best known rail enthusiasts whose photo- al graphs add immensely to this work are Mac Connery and Curt Tillotson, both of the Raleigh-Durham area of North Carolina. Although only a recent friend, Fred Clark, Jr. has been extremely encouraging and helpful I in creating this book.
I hope that this book will add to the enjoyment of Seaboard Coast Line enthusiasts everywhere.
