Scottish Locomotive History 1831 to 1923 by Campbell Highet Dust Jacket has damage.  Indexed 1970 240 Pages
The year 1831 marked the beginning of an era never to be forgotten in Scottish locomotive history. It was the year when the first steam locomotive, built for the Monkland and Kirkintilloch Railway, appeared on the rails in Glasgow. For 92 years after that, Scotland boasted her own steam locomotives, engines able to hold their own with the best in the world-until 1923, when the railways of Britain were 'grouped' and all design and construction taken from the Scottish railway works to England.
So much data concerning Scottish locomotives has appeared in books, technical journals, society and institutional proceedings, that there is often difficulty in tracing details of design and construction. The aim of this book is to present the reader, in the clearest possible way, with as much data on the five main railways of Scotland as possible. It contains biographical notes of the engineers responsible for the development of the steam locomotive in Scotland and is beautifully illustrated with 32 pages of photographs. It provides much valuable material for the student of locomotive history and should also be of general interest to the less technically minded enthusiast.
Campbell Highet spent 44 years of his career as an active railwayman with the Midland Railway, during which time he developed an interest in and a sound knowledge of Scottish railways, particularly their history and design.
He has written two other books on the subject, The Wirral Railway and The Glasgow and South Western Railway.
