DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
Scotland's railways have long been of interest to the enthusiast. There is the incomparable scenery and the industrial background as well the story of the Scottish rail system with its own unique fascination. When the 'Big Four' companies were created in 1923 to rationalise Britain's rail system, two companies divided Scotland: the LMS north of the border incorporated the Highland, Caledonian and Glasgow & South Western railways and the LNER in Scotland was formed from the North British and Great North of Scotland railways. On nationalisation of the 'Big Four' on 1 January 1948, when British Railways came into existence, Scotland was designated a single region and today, in the era of privatisation, the country's rail services are predominantly run by one company, ScotRail.
The mileage of Scottish railways was reduced considerably during the postwar period. Road improvements soon ousted many of the less economic routes and many scenic lines disappeared from the system for ever. However, several lines were considered to be vital in serving the more remote communities in the Highlands and there is still a system north of Perth which has survived, although heavily subsidised.
Steam motive power was the dominant force until the 1960s and even after nationalisation a wide variety of locomotives, some originally belonging to the pre-1923 Grouping companies, could still be seen on the Scottish lines. During the period from 1958 to 1966 the four preserved Scottish locomotives - the `Jones Goods', Gordon Highlander, Glen Douglas and Caledonian No 123 - roamed around the country on special tours organised by the railway clubs. Some ingenious railtours ran during this period and the Easter 'Scottish Rambler' railtours were classics in their time. More modern traction was introduced in the 1960s, including various designs of four-wheeled railbus, but the experiment was short-lived as modern traction failed to save many of the rural railways.
Today, the situation has stabilised and a basic network of railways survives under ScotRail. Recently, a number of specials have brought steam back to some lines and although many closed railways have been converted to other uses, with only a few reminders of the past, parts of some lines and their buildings have been saved by preservationists.
