SCL News is published 6 times a year. Cover story, A locomotive engineer in a diesel cab watches the track ahead while in two-way communication with his division dispatcher transmitting or receiving desired information regarding train operation or condition of track or traffic.
The radio installed in the cab, to which his hand-set is attached, also contains a loudspeaker. In addition, a portable 2-way radio unit is standard equipment for the head-end crew for use on or off the locomotive.
Communication is maintained as needed with local stations or yards, other trains in the area, and with other members of the train crew.
All road and switching locomotives have been so equipped since the middle sixties, and the majority of cabooses on freight trains have stationary installations in addition to the portable sets. Installations on all cabooses should be completed by the end of 1969.
Radio communication supplements existing signals with direct dispatcher train communication, thus expediting train operations while also adding an extra safety factor.
With few exceptions, this type of radio communication is now effective over the entire SCI, system.
