DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
Saskatchewan's Pioneer Streetcars is a detailed account of the growth and operation of the Regina Municipal Railway.
The projected growth of the city in 1912 influenced the development of the street railway routes and rolling stock requirements. However, many routes had to be withdrawn or shortened when it became apparent the projections were far in excess of the actual need for expansion - even after rails had been laid and rolling stock orders received.
World war, drought, economic depression and yet a second world war affected people and their way of life in villages and cities across this continent. In Regina, the services provided by the local transportation system were greatly affected by these uncontrollable forces.
At war time there was a need for more manpower and rolling stock to meet the required demand for car services. During drought and depression, the railway was faced with a need to create government financed projects to keep men employed as few people rode the cars, and service frequencies were seriously reduced.
Saskatchewan's Pioneer Streetcars provides the reader with route maps, schedules and detailed diagrams of various types of cars operated on the Regina Municipal Railway. It contains 68 photographs - many of the cars, and several scenes of early Regina which will interest the historian and the casual reader.
Other illustrations include fascinating sketches by R.J. Sandusky, as well as photos of tickets and transfers used on the Regina Municipal Railway.
