S. Kip Farrington, Jr., calls them "The Santa Fe's Big Three." Others simply called them the 2-10-4, the 4-6-4, and the 4-8-4 after the placement of their trucks and wheels. But no matter what they were called, they were big and powerful engines, an outstanding trio of the world's mightiest steam locomotives. Their builder designed them to move incredible loads, and their crews ran them long and hard; yet for all their volcanic energy, they had beauty and grace and they functioned with the reliability and precision of a railroader's watch. In their prime they hauled most of the fast freight and crack luxury trains, and during the forties they moved a nation at war.
The Santa Fe's Big Three, Kip Farrington's ninth railroad book, is an affectionate biography of the three engine classes from birth through their long and eventful careers. Here in one comprehensive volume is a boxcar-load of photographs, records, blueprints, and data, enough detail to satisfy the most demanding railroad expert and enough nostalgia to gladden the heart of anyone who has thrilled to the lonesome wail of a steam whistle in the night. No one is better qualified to record the story of the Santa Fe's Big Three, for Kip Farrington has studied the world's railroads from the Head End and the Rear End. He writes with the authority of an author who has personally inspected 52 railroad properties in 37 countries and has ridden countless thousands of miles on business cars of 85 Class I lines. He has ridden every division of the Canadian Pacific by day, most of the Canadian National Railroad, railroads in Europe, South America, and Down Under, and he has covered the Santa Fe's extensive system in and behind the Big Three. He has received decorations from Chile ( 1943 ) and Peru ( 1956 ) for his writings about their rail lines.
This volume includes the first Dynamometer Locomotive Performance Test released for the public, authentic transcripts of the Big Three's in-service runs, a chapter on the longest continuous run by a steam locomotive, and approximately 100 builder and action photographs by three top railroad photographers-Otto C. Perry, Preston George, and Dick Kindig.
