Steam locomotive No. 1079, once a work horse for the historic Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway system, was donated to Coffeyville, Kansas, for public display in November 1955. More than 30 years later, the 2-6-2 type had taken a beating from exposure to the outdoor elements. Its sand dome, for example, had been removed earlier after having rusted away from wet sand being left inside. Sadly, the slow deterioration of No. 1079 is a fate shared by many other steam locomotives now on display "for posterity" across the United States. Santa Fe was among the foremost of American railroads that responded generously to requests for steam locomotives to be placed on display in city parks and museums following the end of the steam age. A total of 51 AT&SF steam locomotives are now on display or otherwise held for future exhibition in a dozen states across the U.S. Using photographs and text, renowned steam locomotive historian Lloyd E. Stagner documents both the in-service history of all Santa Fe "steam survivors" and where they are currently located. Noted railroad preservation writer Bob Yarger then comments on what action can and must be taken in order to assure the future survival of many of these treasured artifacts of America's rail heritage. This book is a call to action for railroad enthusiasts and history preservationists everywhere.
