This is the first edition of what I hope will eventually become a complete all time listing of Santa Fe Freight cars. When enough new information becomes available to warrant it, this listing will be revised and reissued.
The Railroad uses a document called the Freight Car Classification Systen, later called a Numerical List of Live Cars or "live list" to help keep track of, and plan, their freight car fleet. The live list listed all of the active revenue freight cars owned by the railroad by class and number series along with information about their size, capacity, etc. This document was revised and reissued every year or two. Each live list offered a snapshot of the railroads freight car fleet at that point in time. Through the use of a number of these live lists I hope to present a clearer picture of the evolution of Santa Fe's freight car fleet.
The main purpose of this document is to aid Santa Fe freight car research. Car class can be determined from car numbers and vice versa, as well as how many cars were active on the railroad and when. This is not meant to be a complete source of information for each freight car class, however. Other sources must be consulted for more detailed or specific information about a particular car or class.
Two listing formats are provided. The first is in number order and includes only the number, the class, and year the car was built. The second format is by car class and includes a brief description and number of active cars for the given years. "Fy" or first year indicates the first year that the number was used with this class of car, and may be different from the year when the cars were built.
