On the Cover...
The combination depot and block tower at Ottawa Junction, Kansas is a very familiar structure to most Santa Fe fans. For the uninitiated, it was a crossroads on the Eastern Division where the third district, the old secondary main line coming up from Oklahoma, joined the second district main line between Kansas City and Emporia. The Lawrence District also connected at Ottawa Junction making travel possible in four directions. The tower must have been a busy place indeed as 17 passenger trains a day passed under its windows in 1942. The rare color photograph was made in 1955 by H. D. Killam before it was torn down to make way for a new brick depot. Installation of TCS made the tower function obsolete.
