COVER PHOTOS: Bob Rogers of Colton, CA built the two models shown on the cover of this issue. The model in the top photo is of GA-183 Class car 314479. Modifications to the kit include a single long roof hatch from the Athearn PS covered hopper with ends filed to shape, the removal of the small angle iron along the upper side of the car and the cutting out of the center two bays and inserting just one. In addition, the three remaining bays were further modified from gravity outlet to pneumatic outlet type. The car is mineral brown and is lettered with Herald King decals. Athearn 70 ton trucks with three springs per side frame were modified by replacing the stock wheels with Kadee 36" wheels. The bottom photo shows a model of GA-160 Class car 400047 used in styrene pellet service. An AHM model was the basis for this conversion. The only modification necessary was the addition of brake castings on the B end for the brake reservoir, cylinder, and valve. Paint on the car is mineral brown except for the unloading bays which are aluminum. Lettering was pieced together from MicroScale and Walter's sets. The car rides on Athearn 70 ton trucks modified as described from the GA-183 Class car. Both photos are by Bob Rogers.
