INTRODUCTION
Forward
Russell Crump was the principal author and driving force behind Volume One in this series. When he died, his research was virtually complete for this volume, and he had started to draft the opening pages. Russell donated his extensive files and collection of Santa Fe materials to Paired Rail Railroad Publications. Therefore, it is with great pride and not a little trepidation that we continue the project Russell started.
The Series
This is the second book in a series covering Santa Fe's engine servicing facilities. The series explains and documents facilities in as detailed a way as possible using photographs, drawings, and personal histories. Volumes are divided according to the mid-1930 organization of the railroad (Gulf, Western, Eastern, and Coast Lines). Santa Fe Locomotive Facilities - Volume One: Gulf Lines covered the lines that made up the Gulf Colorado & Santa Fe in Texas, Louisiana, and southern Oklahoma. This series is based on the railroad's Fuel Oil, Water Service, Building Records, and Evaluation photos supplemented by additional research and images from other sources to fill in the gaps in the historical records.
Volume 2 Introduction
This volume begins the examination of Santa Fe's Western Lines, the largest and most complex of Santa Fe's traditional four Grand Divisions. Because of their complexity, the Western Lines cannot be covered in one volume. The Western Lines Grand Division was divided into two grand districts: the Northern District included the Western Colorado, New Mexico, and Rio Grande divisions; and the Southern District included the Plains, Panhandle, Pecos, and Slaton Divisions. This book will examine Santa Fe locomotive facilities mostly in the state of New Mexico (and a little bit of Colorado and Texas). This book is structured according to Santa Fe's divisions as they were in 1930. At that time, there were three divisions: New Mexico, Rio Grande, and Pecos. During the time covered by this
