In contrast, this book visually documents in comprehensive and systematic fashion the centuries-old history of the Santa Fe area, beginning even with the archeological evidence of those who lived here before the Spaniards arrived. Utilizing reproductions of plans, sketches, archival records, portraits, and particularly photographs, the author has narrated the story of the oldest capital from its founding in 1610 as a villa and the northernmost outpost of the Spanish colonial frontier through the development of its rich, multi-cultural heritage during three political sovereignties. Illustrations of buildings and street scenes throughout the decades since United States control, combined with bird's-eye view and recent aerial photographs graphically record the growth and changing character of the city. Paradoxically, however, much of the historic street pattern through the city and into the plaza area as it appeared in the 1766-68 Urrutia map of Santa Fe is still discernible in the aerial photographs, while the Palace of the Governors and various religious structures, or their successors, are still in the same locations.
