The Sanson Tramway was a light railway which linked the Manawatu County town of Sanson with Himatangi, on the Foxton Branch of New Zealand Railways. Perhaps it was insignificant from a national point of view but therein lay its charm. It had a long life during which it served its purpose well. It was unique in that it was built and operated by a county council, and its story brings out clearly the trials and tribulations faced by the people who developed our country.
This exhaustive, fascinating, and fully illustrated account of the rise and decline of the Sanson Tramway is based on years of research aided by access to official records. It is of value, not only to railway enthusiasts and historians, but to all who are interested in the early struggles and growth of local New Zealand communities.
Railway enthusiasts will find the data made available in the form of locomotive and rolling stock diagrams and illustrations, and sketches of station yard layouts, worth the price of the book by themselves. They will be surprised at the number and variety of locomotives, mainly ex-NZR, that were used on the tramway.
This work is adapted from a thesis prepared by the author for the degree of Master of Arts. It will ensure that a special aspect of the development of our country will be remembered and recorded for the benefit of future students and historians.
