San Francisco has from its earliest days presented special challenges in transportation. A peninsula city, its roughly forty-two square miles are surrounded on three sides by water and on the fourth by a narrow land link. New arrivals to San Francisco in the gold-rush days found deplorable land transport, no roads worthy of the name, no railroads or stage coaches. In the city's commercial district streets were on paper only. In reality, streets were rutted mud trails or hastily-built plank roads. A few small vessels offered irregular service in the bay and along the coast. Necessity, however, indeed proved to be the mother of invention. Thirty years after the gold rush San Franciscans boasted a transportation system equal to that of any American city and surpassing most. They built a deep-water port where only muddy shallows had existed, mastered the hills with unique cable cars, linked the city to the American continent by rail and to the world by steamship lines. Within San Francisco Bay they developed the world's largest system of ferryboats.
People always remember their first trip to San Francisco, unless they were fortunate enough to be native born. This has been so from the gold rush to the present. San Francisco is one of those unique places so aesthetically striking, so impressive in its setting, that arriving by land, sea, or air creates an indelible memory.
Moving people and goods in, out and around San Francisco has involved almost every mode of transportation from ox-cart to airplane, from clipper ship to riverboat. Its residents over the last century and a half have adapted in creative ways to living with geographical challenges. Surrounding bay and ocean, formidable hills and drifting sands, and earthquake and fire all have left their marks on the City's transportation history. San Franciscans, faced with an overwhelming need and considerable determination, rose to the challenge. San Francisco by Land & Sea is a photo collection that recalls the steps along the way.
