We started the exciting voyage en route to Hingham on the steamboat Henry F. Eaton which steamed down the river from Calais to Eastport, Maine, where we boarded the steamship Governor Dingley. Of course it would not occur to any seafaring family like ours to travel by railroad, so we children had the fun of taking an ocean voyage on what then seemed to be a large white ocean liner. This passage was a most memorable event as it was a very rough one indeed; the Governor Dingley was known to be somewhat top-heavy, and it rolled so incessantly that we were heaved into forty-five degree positions all night long. We all seemed to be quite good sailors, however, and by the time we reached Boston Harbor my interest in steamboats had increased immeasurably, by leaps and bounds.
