The technological know-how embedded in the company is today, as in the past, in the legacy of its employees. A highly skilled group of professionals, knowledgeable of the rail signaling as discipline and as applied science. The company has driven innovation in signaling since its founding on April 13, 1881. Today, as in the past, the professionals at Union Switch & Signal (US&S) are engaged in many pioneering applications aimed at changing the industry's applications and operational needs, creating more industry firsts than we have in the past.
In commemorating the 130 years of continuous business activities, I thought it was important to document the great history of US&S and its employees. The book is based on the best available data researched for the purpose of this commemorative publication by the writer, to whom I extend my sincere appreciation, and a small support staff.
While great efforts have been dedicated to include every person, every significant project, and the many patented technologies that have enriched our history, we know that some have been missed. We regret this and we are certain in everyone's understanding. It has been almost impossible to reach all of the thousands of people who significantly contributed to the history and the success of the company.
The future of the organization is unquestionably good as it has its roots in such "technological greatness." The content of the book is proof of such an exuberant past and promising future.
