This book has taken the 1934 Track Diagrams plus most sidetrack agreements from my hardbound series, The Rutland-60 Years of Trying, combining material furnished by Stearns Jenkins on ownership dates of various industries along the Rutland into a comprehensive book of the spurs and sidetracks along the railroad. Every mile of this railroad is also shown on the USGS Topo Maps, slightly reduced to save space in some cases. The line from White Creek to Hoosick Jct. is also shown as well as the Bristol RR. and a portion of the Norwood & St. Lawrence.
The Government has made an error in showing the former Rutland between Norwood and Ogdensburg as abandoned. This is far from fact as it is operating at this writing and has been in an as-needed basis.
It is suggested that those of you who do not have a magnifying glass, buy one, as there is much information on the topo maps that may be difficult to discern with the naked eye, particularly those of you of my age or older. In many cases I have put numbers in circles (and letters of the alphabet) which means some place on that page, or nearby, there is further information on the topic in question. This book does require some initiative on your part to look everything over closely as there are many notations on the topo maps, as well as the diagrams. No doubt I goofed along the way, but it was quite easy to do trying to place most, if not all, points of interest on the various maps and diagrams. Trust the errors are at a minimum. This was quite an undertaking and required more work and time than I originally thought it would.
Where I have noted direction, and in most cases it is north, this refers to direction by train schedule or train orders and not the points of the compass. Hopefully this will further orient whatever your interests might be. Also, in order to study the O&LC Division in a more orderly manner and to have the stations come in proper sequence from left to right, after reaching Alburgh coming from the south, we have jumped to Ogdensburg and are working east to Alburgh where we finish this book.
There are ways I could have improved upon this book, such as making the sidetrack diagrams larger, but I felt one could go to the Rutland series of books for the real detail on the diagrams. This book is for those of you that might want to follow along the roadbed and see what is left of the points of interest or to visualize by looking at the topo map what kind of territory the Rutland operated in. The latter could be helpful in modelling also. I'm certain that after you have looked at the topo maps enough, you will be able to easily visualize the type of terrain that is present along any given point. Enjoy!
