INTRODUCTION
This ninth volume of the hard cover series on the Rutland is the final proposed chapter by yours truly. That is, unless a large amount of further photos and materials become available and makes it feasible to do another hard cover book. They have been a lot of enjoyment to put together as well as a lot of head scratching trying to find the correct answer. Some of the operations of its trains did require some guessing on my part and maybe sometime in the future I will take the time and really dig into all phases of its operations. Time will tell.
This book has some of the photos and material left over from previous volumes on account of no room. Also, quite a bit of new material was found after the prior books were at the printer for printing and binding. The portion of the Employees Timetable shown herein for the year 1932, shows the local freight train schedules as Second Class Trains. This gives a true account of their operations with no guesswork required. Some of the accident reports are shown and these are actual copies of their individual reports. Some of the backup material used in the final abandonment proceedings is shown. These, too, are actual copies of the original material only reduced to use the available space to the maximum. Within these reports are numerous tips on various customers and what they manufactored or used in their operations and where the material was shipped to or received from.
Of particular interest to me was the report that Orville K. McKnight wrote on "Mooers Junction." It not only described Mooers Jct. but gave a good account of the history of the Ogdensburg & Lake Champlain Railroad. He was an Agent-Operator at Mooers and has since passed away. What you see is an actual copy of what he wrote only reduced to conserve space. I did not try to correct any part of it but to print it as is.
There isn't too much else I can say about this book. It is a catchall but it does have some very good material in it. I should have mentioned the Report on Pages 144-148, about the inspection of the O & LC in October of 1901, the year the Rutland commenced operations. This, along with the inspection made in January of 1899 prior to the Rutland's purchase of the O & LC, is quite informative. You will note that even in 1899 on Page 155, there was talk this early on the filling in of the Rouses Point Trestle. Too bad it wasn't accomplished as it could have saved many headaches through the years. Might even be used today by the Vermont Railway had it been filled in. This report of 1899 had to be retyped but was done word for word. The original was just too far gone to copy legibly.
At this point I have no definite plans on doing books about other railroads. To those of you who haven't purchased my Rutland-Betterment Book, may I suggest you read my flyer on it very closely. It (The Book) has many little tidbits of information and is like a mini history of the Rutland from 1901 on. I only wish I had put it together before I did any of the hard cover Rutland books. It would have been very helpful. I do plan to do a new book along the lines of my Side Track Diagram book but it will be standard size, both hard cover and soft cover. Nothing real fancy but as complete as I can make it with many facts about its buildings and structures along with much additional side track information, as well as info on the industries. It will be for the historian of the Rutland as well as helpful information for the modeler. Hopefully it will be out this year (1990).
