LC (Ogdensburg \u0026amp; Lake Champlain) Division of the Rutland was as well known as any of the divisions. To the Rutland, it probably was reverenced the most for several reasons. It contained the principal junction with another carrier, namely with the New York Central at Norwood, N.Y. where the bulk of its traffic came from. There also was another reason for the Rutland to pay attention to this Division. People living in the area even today claim there are only two seasons; eleven months of winter and the month of July. There might be just a wee bit of an exaggeration in that remark but it was a wild place in the winter with rolling hills and cuts where the Rutland had to traverse to reach its principal junction. These cuts spelled the woe of running a railroad in this part of the country as they were plugged solid with wind-blown drifting snow most of the winter. I can just imagine the sectionmen trying to keep switches clear of snow with the wind blowing the snow about besides being below zero much of the time. What a place to have a railroad! No wonder the younger men of the crews were on this Division.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv style=\"text-align:left\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family:Calibri;font-size:1.13em;color:#000000;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;text-decoration:none;\"\u003eIn its day the 30's and 40's and into the early 50's, many carloads of milk originated along this portion of the railroad destined for Boston and New York City. The early 50's saw its decline with this \"white gold\" and the solid trains of milk became mixed with freight cars and eventually it dried up entirely. No liquid milk was handled the latter part of the Rutland's existence although a few stations shipped powered milk right to the end. Whey was also shipped in bulk and in barrels using Rutland covered hoppers for the bulk product. More on this later on in this book.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv style=\"text-align:left\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family:Calibri;font-size:1.13em;color:#000000;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;text-decoration:none;\"\u003eOver the months that I have been gathering information about this railroad from former employees and shippers, it would appear that the crews on this Division were a bit more willing to go along with changes, particularly the change that caused the railroad to have its final strike, which was changing the division points. I'm not saying that most of those on the other divisions were any less devoted to their jobs or to the railroad but this was the impression I received from others not on the 0 \u0026amp; LC Division. I guess the harshness of the winters may have bonded them a bit more into a working team or possibly the layovers had something to do with it as there appeared to be more on this division over the years than on the others. Whatever caused it sure made good railroad people out of them.
