INTRODUCTION
This, by far, was the hardest volume to complete scriptwise. That is why Volume V, Part 1 and Part 2 were not printed ahead of Volume VI. Without taking years to complete, and to do the job correctly, it was extremely difficult to put the passenger operations together. This, of course, had to include the mail, express and milk operations as they were all interwoven. There just wasn't any way to explain it properly without doing the entire operations. At least to me that seemed the way to do it. There were some holes I had to fill in, and hopefully I'm not too far off. A complete set of Employees Timetables would have helped along with more Public Timetables at my side. But this could go on forever for even then one would still have to do some guessing.
I know of a source that has the complete set and maybe some time later on after this project is over, time will permit me to borrow them and see what holes I can fill in and write an article or two for the Rutland Railroad Historical Society at Rutland, Vermont.
Much also can be written about the freight operations as I only skimmed over it. Time and space did not permit a more thorough account of the freight operations. Many changes were made during each year just like adjustments were made in the passenger scheduling. Continual fine tuning was being performed to try and get the optimum performance from equipment and man (person).
My Rutland soft cover book on Betterments was a valuable source of information, even to me, putting both Volume 5's together. This book should have been put together almost before I started this Rutland Project. At least, before Volume II was put together. It is like a mini history of the Rutland from 1901 through 1962 and naturally covers the entire railroad with bits and pieces of valuable information. I know some are not that keen on soft cover books but I'm fairly certain a $10.00 bill at your nearest bookbinder or printer will get yourself a hardcover book. I only did soft covers to keep the cost down as everyone could get this handy reference mini history. (See how I sneaked in a plug on the book.) Don't be fooled because it is soft cover. It has a lot of very useful information to the Rutland followers, be they historian, rail buff, modeler, or someone who just likes railroading.
Those of you interested in the construction of the line between Burlington and Rouse's Point in 1899-1901 will be very pleased with this volume because it has the complete contract for the construction of this some 50 miles of railroad, along with the branch to Noyan Junction. My thinking was this was the ideal place to preserve a copy of this document as I believe this is the only copy in existence. This is the case with much of my copied materials. The same will apply in Volume VII, The Addendum, to follow later this year. It is already being put together and as of this date, 3/12/90, I'm working at page 39, layout and design.
