All of the photographs, with the exception of a very few of those depicting scenes in Russia, and with the Russian forces, were taken originally and exclusively for Colliers and they have not appeared elsewhere except by special arrangement and permission. A large number of these photographs have never been printed in the pages of Colliers and they are published in this book for the first time. Even these were chosen from hundreds of others, and they represent but a small part of the great mass of photographs which were secured by Colliers indefatigable representatives at the front. In each weekly issue of Colliers it was obviously impossible to devote more than a few pages exclusively to war pictures, and in such a small space it is a task of exceeding difficulty to convey to the casual reader any adequate realization of the unique value and the comprehensive extent of Colliers Russo-Japanese War service. In this book the cumulative effect of many pictures helps to give at least a partial idea of the amount of material gathered by Colliers correspondents, and it should be further explained that almost every one of the pictures herein reproduced is chosen from perhaps a dozen or a score of photographs of similar scenes.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv style=\"text-align:left\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family:Calibri;font-size:1.13em;color:#000000;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;text-decoration:none;\"\u003eSince the days of the telegraph and the modern war correspondent, there has never been a war in which the work of the chroniclers was beset with such difficulties. During the early months of hostilities practically all of the correspondents were bottled up in Tokio, chafing at their delay, beseeching this official and that, buying winter outfits only to be compelled to exchange them for summer equipment, and wasting their energies during this fretful period of uncertainty in the description of conventional phases of Japanese life or of the entertainments given them by their inscrutable hosts of the Japanese war departments. It was only by some rare stroke of forehandedness or luck, by which he escaped temporarily from the Japanese watchfulness and censorship, that any correspondent was able at this time to do effective work. Such, for instance, was the experience. of Collier's correspondent-photographer Robert L. Dunn, who was sent to Chemulpo before hostilities broke out and who \"beat\" the newspaper and periodical world with his pictures of the battle of Chemulpo and of the first landing of Japanese troops on Korean soil. All of the pictures printed in this book of the march of the Japanese flying column through Korea were taken by Collier's correspondent at a time when scores of trained observers, sent by other publications and newspapers in various parts of the world, were \"bottled up\" in Tokio Indeed, for many weeks during the early part of the war, practically the only genuine Russo-Japanese War photographs published in this country were those printed ' Collier's or republished in other publications by special permission.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv style=\"text-align:left\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family:Calibri;font-size:1.13em;color:#000000;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;text-decoration:none;\"\u003eAmong those who gathered the material published in this volume, and who were sent to the front to represent Collier's exclusively, were the photographers James H Hare and Robert L. The greater portion of the Russian pictures were taken by Victor Bulla, who accompanied the Russian forces in their mid-winter march across frozen Lake Baikal and the publication of whose work in this country was controlled exclusively by Collier's. Could the history of the taking of each photograph published in this book accompany it the result would be a human document of unique and extraordinary interest. Dozens of the photographs which the reader may survey at his ease were taken only after long marches over frozen and wind-swept country, the films were developed in zero weather with the help of Korean coolies or of Japanese commissary officers, and they reached Collier's office only after being carried scores and perhaps hundreds of miles by coolie runners through a country where a mail service was unknown. Merely to get to the front during the early months of the war meant the hiring of horses, interpreters, and coolie servants innumerable ; in the later campaigns, under the \"personally conducted\" system enforced by the Japanese, it meant traveling at an expense which would not have been exceeded were the working correspondent an idle tourist traveling in luxury through the centres of civilization.
