DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
The rural railway has always held a fascination for the visitor whether seen from the window of a passing train or glanced over the hedgerow from a passing vehicle. Rural railways came into their own at the turn of the century when the construction of light railways was made possible by the provisions of the 1896 Light Railways Act.
Many light railways sprang up in the first half of the century only to be squeezed out of use by the country bus, many branch lines and cross country lines of the larger railway companies succumbed to road competition and severe economies enforced by railway management.
Today a new generation of rural railways is springing up as more and more tramways and light railways are constructed as purely tourist concerns for the casual visitor or family outing. The scene is therefore a continually variable one of line closure and new line' construction. The countryside is festooned with abandoned railways and new railway projects, the scene is always changing for what is here today might be gone tomorrow.
