Introduction
The Mexico resident was my grandmother, Ellen B. Hutchinson, and at the time of the accident I was fourteen months old, not yet fully aware of my surroundings and certainly not old enough to remember the incident. Of course, I've heard many times since then about the accident. It seems that this was my first encounter with "the railroad" from Rumford to Kennebago.
Grandpa, Fred Watson Hutchinson, had left their rented farm one morning in 1927 with a pocketful of money, intent on buying a house for Grandma. Their lives together had been one of continual moving, following jobs, and Grandma longed for the security of owning her own place. She was in near ecstasy that day, anticipating the home for which they had saved over the years. It was not to be. The flash and color of a brand-new 1927 Chevrolet caught Grandpa's eye, and in a fit of desire and enthusiasm he bought the car instead of the house.
