Route of the Warbonnets By Joe McMillan A contemporary look at the Santa Fe DJ
Route of the Warbonnets By Joe McMillan A contemporary look at the Santa Fe. Hard Cover with Dust Jacket Copyright 1977, SIXTH Printing 1984 Lots of black and white photos.
The famous red, yellow and silver "warbonnet" paint scheme was the headdress of Santa Fe passenger trains for nearly thirty-seven years. The locomotives that bore this distinctive paint weren't just locomotives, they were symbols of fast trains, excellent service and the "we care" attitude of the Santa Fe. From Chicago to Texas to California, these engines, and the trains they led, left an indelible mark on all those who experienced them. The warbonnet units are gone now, but their spirit lives on in the present operations of the Santa Fe. Tour the railroad with us and see the last days of these renowned locomotives, and also view the modern Santa Fe with its unit trains, piggyback hotshots and new power. Witness the end of a memorable era and the beginning of another. Our train is about to leave Dearborn Station. All aboard!
