Introduction
The New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad, commonly known as the New Haven Railroad, was created in 1872 when the New York & New Haven and the Hartford & New Haven railroad companies decided to join forces and merge. For the next several decades the New Haven aggressively expanded across southern New England by swallowing up rival railroad companies such as the Boston & New York Air Line, the Boston & Providence, the Central New England, the Housatonic, the Naugatuck, the New Haven & Northampton, the New York & New England, the New York, Providence, & Boston, the Norwich & Worcester, the Old Colony, and the Providence & Worcester.
By the late 19th Century, the New Haven Railroad was operating in the states of New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts. From this time until the end of its corporate existence as a result of being merged into the Penn Central Transportation Company effective January 1, 1969, the New Haven was the largest and most important railroad in New England.
