or steam locomotives, certainly not the subject of current events or interests? Because it is history. Today there are few left who have a clear memory of steam locomotives and their age; this manuscript redresses that by being both a history book and a picture book. It is a history of the Illinois Central, with a focus on the steam age and the machines that propelled it, but with perspective. Many books have been written on railroads, many failing to render a perspective with the dialogue. It is that "from the point of view" that paints the world in which the progress of the Illinois Central took place, an awfully important canvas spanning 1850 to 1950. Thus, the history is American, with a dash of foreign chronicles where it adds to the portrait, and the pictures visually set the time and tempo and technology in development of the Illinois Central.

What makes the period 1850 to 1950 interesting is how many novel and life-changing items arose in that century, especially the middle fifty years: the telephone, automobile, airplane, electric light, phonograph, motion picture, and radio to name just a few. It is an interesting period because it shows the growth of the nascent railroads of the 1850's into the nation's first big business in the 1890's. Many of today's business techniques such as cost accounting and finance, production management, mass production, and labor management were developed by the railroads first; these skills were then incorporated in the next growth industries: steel, oil, tobacco and chemical. As to the photographs, it is fortunate that the development of photography overlaps that of railroading. On viewing the photographs, which show the changes in steam locomotives over the years, the pictures evolve from staged and static engine shots into action scenes of trains; this parallels the development of photography from slow shutters and long exposures into faster shutters and film speeds. Along with the history then, pictures are included to set the time and place, the visual perspective; the pictures focus on steam locomotives, showing the development of these machines that mirrored the advancement of technology during the industrial age; the author purposely chose pictures with people, which give both perspective and proportion. Regarding any particular picture of a locomotive, the reader must remember to differentiate between the time it was built and the date its image was captured.

While the last steam engine on the Illinois Central wasn't scrapped until 1961, the real age of steam was over before 1950, when the construction of new engines stopped; steam locomotives really acted in a supporting role as the changeover to diesel-powered fleets took place during the 1950's, and steam was no longer used in any service in 1959. The primary source for this work was the Annual Reports of the Illinois Central, which listed locomotives and mentioned additions to the fleet in a more general way; the "year ends" of those reports, especially in the early years, were not always comparable; for example, some reports, written in January or February of a particular year, referred to fleet changes for the past year, but included changes that happened in the month of January of the current year. All to say, absolute numbers is not the concern of this work but, rather, showing a pictorial representation of the fleet at different times in its evolution. Illinois Central had the practice, at least in the early days, of reusing roster spots (#'s) as soon as a new unit replaced a retired one, and of renumbering the entire fleet almost regularly; the author relied heavily on Bulletin # 140 for dating and identifying photographs. In describing particular engines, the terms Drivers (diameter of drive wheels), Boiler Pressure (pressure of heated engine water), Total Weight (weight of engine on all wheels) and Tractive Force (calculated figure of pounds of pulling force) are used hundreds of times; for simplicity, they are referred to as D (in inches), BP (in pounds per square inch), TW (in pounds) and TF (in pounds). While quoted data are as accurate as possible, Tractive Force, which is a calculated number based on a percentage of steam pressure, can cause some trouble. The generally accepted calculation utilized an 85% factor, but Illinois Central also used a 90% factor at times. Land grants, where a railroad gained title to neighboring property by completing construction of a railroad section, played a large part in the formation of Illinois Central; besides the original State of Illinois grant of 2.6 million acres, five other land grant railroads eventually became a part of the Illinois Central system: Dubuque & Sioux City, Yazoo & Mississippi Valley, Gulf & Ship Island, Mobile & Girard, and the Vicksburg, Shreveport & Texas; ultimately almost five million acres of federal land grants were associated with the Illinois Central System. Through rail companies acquired in later years, the Illinois Central can trace its roots back as far as 1832, the start of construction on the 25-mile long West Feliciano Railroad between Woodville, Mississippi and Bayou Sara, Louisiana; the West Feliciana's locomotive Mississippi made its first run in 1837.

The reader will notice that there is not a lot of detail on the construction and operation of steam locomotives, and there is a reason for that. The basic principle of a steam locomotive is simple: steam made in the boiler is transferred to a cylinder where the expansive force pushes a piston connected to a drive rod that turns the wheels; that said, design, mechanics and technology over the years took that basic principle and refined it to the peak of power and efficiency. While the principle is basic, when one looks at the array of valves, dials and levers in the cab and pipes, pumps, siphons, injectors and flues around the firebox one realizes basic is relative. The appendix outlines information on steam locomotives for those new to the subject, and points the reader toward comprehensive sources should the interest be there.

Every railroad had its own look, its own feel that set it apart from the others; whether it was the cab-forward locomotives of the Southern Pacific or the "Big Boys" of the Union Pacific, or the Harvey Houses of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe or the Tuscan Red of the Pennsylvania, each had its own look and feel. The Illinois Central was no different: essentially a water-level route competing with the Mississippi river, operations on the Illinois Central were a long and slow drag from Chicago south to New Orleans; the railroad didn't require prodigious mountain passes or lengthy tunnels, but entailed hundreds of miles of roadway through virgin prairie with thousands of bridges, culverts and trestles spanning rivers, streams and creeks draining the Mississippi river valley; Illinois Central locomotive power was tailored to this purpose, fundamentally slow and powerful.

Remember that dates move around a little bit...when it is said that someone patented an idea on such-andsuch a date, he or she may have demonstrated it before that date and/or invented it sometime earlier. Dates are meant to show approximate time and to give context to everything else that was going on in the period being discussed. In addition, there are many ideas mentioned, noted or dated that may have been attempted before; the date shown generally would be the timing of the first practical version of the notion or theory under scrutiny and not necessarily the actual date of conception. A particular date is not meant to represent the final word on carbon-dating innovation, just some perspective. There are two excellent histories on the Illinois Central, one by Carlton J. Corliss and one by John E Stover; the purpose of this rendering is to provide more perspective, admittedly sacrificing some comprehensiveness and detail.

While care has been taken to describe, date and categorize photographs, some errors are inevitable.
