Stepping inside the Rock Island Depot Railroad Museum at Fairbury, Nebraska, is a step back into another era, when everyday life revolved around arrival and departure of a dozen or more passenger trains each day, The depot was the scene of many joyous welcomes and tearful goodbyes. Its platform was the place newcomers first set foot in town, or the last place departing residents stood before leaving, perhaps never to return. For travelers, their only glimpse of Fairbury may have been of the depot, seen after raising a window shade in the middle of the night.
