Engineer Joe Marks and fireman John Dowdy were eager to get home. It was August, 1938 and another scorching summer day was drawing to a close for the two railroaders as their steam locomotive No. 40 barked and snorted its way across the Sandhills on its trip from Fayetteville to Aberdeen in south-central North Carolina.
Even though it was the midst of the Great Depression, No. 40 was toting a fair train load of goods: cotton bales and fertilizer in boxcars, gasoline in tank cars and pulp wood in rack cars. The lumbering freight train rocked from side to side on tracks plunked down in the white sand as it struggled to the top of each ridge, then coasted freely down the other side.
At the village of Raeford, the crew stopped to talk to Clyde Upchurch, the undisputed watermelon king of the area. He was just starting to load watermelons into one of the Seaboard Air Line's specially-designed ventilated box cars built for such purposes.
