Inside Dust Jacket
In June 1877, General William Jackson Palmer's new Denver & Rio Grande Railway reached the summit of Veta Pass in Colorado, 9,400 feet above sea level and deep within the Sangre De Cristo Mountains. This narrow gauge line to the San Luis Valley soon became renowned as both a scenic wonder and engineering marvel throughout the world.
General Palmer's railroad hauled agricultural and mineral products east, while tourists traveled west to the new tourist destinations of Wagon Wheel Gap and Veta Pass. By the mid-1890s, however, the narrow gauge railroad could no longer handle the traffic. The D&RG needed a new standard gauge line to Alamosa and completed the new route over La Veta Pass in November 1899.
Because of its remoteness, operations over La Veta Pass have not been well documented by photographers and historians over the years. Passenger service operated at night, and relatively few saw freight trains along this route. Although rumors about the end of narrow gauge operations sent railfans flocking to such places as Cumbres Pass and Durango, standard gauge operation over La Veta
