The Campbells could hardly wait for the wonderful Twentieth Century. Especially Susan, who was seven years old and had nineteen centuries in her pocket . . . one penny for each hundred years.
The four older girls ached to become "Twentieth Century Women"; Grandma gaily watched from the sidelines; Papa had his fling; and Mama could hardly believe it all was happening.
This is their story as they lived it - tenderly, rebelliously, impatiently -straight through to the dawn of 1901.
The century did not turn easily for the Campbells. As a family they seemed as sturdy as their own house high above the Ohio River. The floods that threatened lower town never could touch them, but gossip was another thing.
Mama led right into it by doing her Christian duty and getting her reward in Rivertown. The neighbor ladies said she was prideful and they confidently, awaited the fall. - Naturally, when the pretty young preacher's wife came to town and Papa spruced up, it didn't surprise them a bit.
Then, for the first time in her life, Mama was troubled. Her five girls grew headstrong. Grandma added fuel to the fire with her tough, witty observations.
The result is an intimate family novel that embraces life in full, from heartbreak and sorrow to the joys of young love. The Campbells and their friend and relatives are the kind of folk whose I lives left deep, rich traces on America Mrs. Harris knows and loves them and her novel evokes a warm nostalgia for the days when our century was new; j when major problems concerned Saturday night baths, sugar cookies, courting sofas, and the whistle of the year's first steamboat finally rounding that last bend.
