Foreword
This little book is not a complete history of the Rimutaka Incline, let alone the Wellington-Masterton railway of which it once formed a part. Such a history has already been writtenby the late W. N. Cameron, whose book A Line of Railway was published by the NZ Railway and Locomotive Society in 1976.
Instead this book, as the title suggests, is directed at those who intend to rediscover the old line for themselves, for the route from Cross Creek to Kaitoke is now part of a walking track which each year attracts more and more visitors.
Therefore, the main aim of the book is to provide a link between the old railway and today's remains so the reader will find a number of pairs of photographs each taken from the same spot but separated by several, or in some cases many, decades.
If this book succeeds in attacting more people to walk the old line and to visit the last remaining Fell engine at Featherston then it has fulfilled its purpose.

Introduction
The Rimutaka Incline was, to use an overworked and misused term, unique. It was a mountain line which used a centre rail system devised by English engineer John Barraclough Fell, a system used only on two other rail routes in the world.
But the other two lines closed not long after they were opened, leaving the Rimutaka Incline only not the only one of its kind anywhere but also the only commercially successful application of Fell's principle.
And if not unique, its method of operation, which entailed placing locomotives equally throughout a train, was certainly unusual indeed.
