Whoever thinks that railroading has become so boring that it offers few moments of excitement, should have been in Richmond Junction on the night that torrential rains hit that town.
Mark Rudd was born to the rails, having spent most of his boyhood around railroad property. But even though he had become chief clerk in the assistant trainmaster's (ATM) office after finishing college, his career with the Central and Western Railroad didn't look like it was going anywhere. Hank Duncan, the ATM and boss, was always coming up with something impossible-or almost impossible-for Rudd to do, and it looked like he was holding a grudge against his young clerk for some reason.
On the day of the rains, Duncan rudely started shouting orders at Rudd in a beanery, right in front of the girl his clerk was trying to impress. That was the last straw-Rudd quit. His longed-for career on the rails was ended.
