In the various areas of history, a few scholars shine. It is no exaggeration to say that Richard "Dick" Cleghorn Overton (1907-1988) was to the study of American railroad history what Frederick Jackson Turner had earlier become to Western history or Ulrich Bonnel Phillips to Southern history. These historians led their fields. While Turner and Phillips are much better known, Overton also should be remembered for his impact on scholarship. His contributions included more than such superbly crafted books as Burlington West: A Colonization History of the Burlington Railroad (Harvard University Press, 1941); Gulf To Rockies: The Heritage of the fort Worth and Denver-Colorado and Southern Railways (University of Texas Press, 1953); Burlington Route: A History of the Burlington Lines (Knopf, 1965); and Perkins/Budd: Railway Statesmen of the Burlington (Greenwood, 1982); they involved his work with others interested in railroad history. Resembling Turner and Phillips, Overton eagerly assisted numerous students, specialists, and interested persons. He continually made comments about source materials, draft manuscripts, and the like.
