This book is the fifteenth in a series of publications by the Boston Street Railway Association on public transportation in New England. The Association was founded in 1959 as a non-profit educational and historical organization with the specific intents of preserving transit history and studying present and future mass transportation developments.

The Association owns one of the last pieces of conventional street railway equipment to run in the city of Boston, former Metropolitan Transit Authority type 5 streetcar, number 5706. This vehicle was built by the J.G. Brill Company of Philadelphia in 1924, and for 45 years thereafter, it carried thousands of passengers in the cities and towns served by the M.T.A.

The car was retired in 1959, and it was purchased by the Boston Street Railway Association at this time. Funds from this publication and from earlier ones are used for the restoration of 5706, which is now located at the Branford Trolley Museum in East Haven, Connecticut, and for the publication of future transportation histories.
