THE RGS STORY- LOCOMOTIVES AND ROLLING STOCK ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
MUCH OF THE DETAILED information about RGS locomotives, Galloping Geese and rolling stock evolved from James L. Ehernberger and his extensive files of original conductor books and engine-repair books were gathered by Richard H. Kindig as records kept in storage at Ridgway were discarded at this terminal. In addition, the Colorado Railroad Museum files of RGS paper work were Jim Key's source of information, a monumental project of pulling together records into a readable form from large locomotive and car rosters, etc.
Karl Schaeffer (promoter of the Ridgway Railroad Museum and builder of replica Motor No. 1) proved to be the vital link for RGS Motor (Galloping Goose) information, as well as a large part of locomotive information from the files at the museum. John Maxwell Jr. became most instrumental in detailed information gleaned from his father's extensive collection, and from having worked at the Colorado Railroad Museum. Bruce Maxwell, another son of John W. Maxwell, provided prints of his father's equipment drawings, and can provide photographic scans.
The group of volunteers at the Galloping Goose Historical Society of Dolores provided their photographs and skill at working Goose No. 5 into operating condition, reproduced on these pages, including information about details. Gabriel Bradford and Herb Kelsey kindly opened their files from The Galloping Goose publication, produced by the Rio Grande Southern Historical & Technical Society, to present detailed information about Receiver Victor A. Miller's involvement, maintaining a working RGS railroad. Others providing their extensive knowledge include: Stan Schwedler of Coronado Scale Models, Robert E. Sloan's book, A Century & Ten of D&RGW Narrow Gauge Freight Cars, Al Chione, Allen Copeland, Greg LePak, Ed and Nancy Bathke, and W. George Cook. In addition, our friend and gatherer of RGS artifacts and locomotives, Robert W. Richardson, has been of great help, actively involved at age 95.
