This is the eighth annual report of the Association of American Railroad's research activities at its Research Center located in the Technology Center of the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. Although conditions have made it necessary to operate under a considerably reduced budget this year, nevertheless substantial progress has been made and worthwhile results effected. This report is intended to present only the highlights of research activities and accomplishments during the past year. A detailed account of each research project and its results will be found either in the report of the Association committee for which the work was conducted or in a separately issued report of the Research Center.
No new building construction was undertaken during the year, but the option to lease the south one-half of the block between 31st, 32nd, Federal and Dearborn Streets was exercised as otherwise the option would have terminated in March 1960. This provides space for additional building construction that may be needed in future years.
