The fascination which the narrow gauge lines of the Denver and Rio Grande Western exert is and has been directly in an inverse proportion to their actual contribution to that railroad's cash flow, particularly in the last few decades of their existence. As a consequence we have been treated to an extensive bibliography covering most phases of its operation in the 20th century. Narrow gauge lines have been examined in macro and micro, and some non-afficianados have become quite vocal in their complaints that an essentially moribund and archaic institution whose usefulness was questionable has been exhalted and glorified beyond all reasonable and rational limits.
While this position is not without merit, the legend of the slim-gauge and its mystique over the years have created a group of followers whose interest shows no sign of waning over the years. Like the Partisans of other lost causes, with a passion second to none, narrow gauge fans have become a group to be reckoned with and it is hoped that what follows here is of interest to them.
