As time marches on, it is becoming increasing difficult to remember the first Class 1 railroad to ever be abandoned. Employees of the road have mostly passed on, likewise the folks who lived along the line and witnessed the passing generations of trains. Elderly employees and trackside bystanders who remain can still provide us with wonderful O\u0026amp;W memories. Those memories, however, have become suspect, to some degree, because of fading recollections and the inability to correctly recall events that happened so long ago. It is, unfortunately, a human trait to let once vivid memories become clouded, then slip away through the passage of time.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv style=\"text-align:left\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family:Calibri;font-size:0.82em;color:#000000;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;text-decoration:none;\"\u003eI was not fortunate enough to have been able to witness the life of the New York, Ontario \u0026amp; Western Railway during its seventy-eight-year existence. Rather, I was introduced to an abandoned O\u0026amp;W Railway during the summer of 1962-five years after the demise of the line.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv style=\"text-align:left\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family:Calibri;font-size:0.82em;color:#000000;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;text-decoration:none;\"\u003eSince then, I have come to know, embrace, and appreciate the life and history of the railroad through a variety of means. Ferreting out the railroad's surviving paper trail at universities, libraries, and historical societies is one method that can be employed to perpetuate an accurate memory of the long gone railroad. Interviewing the few surviving employees and their descendents is a means to acquiring a more personal account of the O\u0026amp;W's life and lore, while exploring the abandoned O\u0026amp;W right-of-way provides a means of putting all of the written and verbal information into proper context. It also is an opportunity to examine, interpret, and, to some degree, imagine, what activity once took place along the railroad's now foliage-fenced trail.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv style=\"text-align:left\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family:Calibri;font-size:0.82em;color:#000000;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;text-decoration:none;\"\u003eRegardless of the means employed to accurately remember the O\u0026amp;W, it is the lack of sensory input that reduces our ability to enjoy the memory of the defunct line. At one time, there were passing trains for eyes to enjoy the motion of turning wheels and billows of steam-filled smoke. Even during the death throes of the railroad, there were colorfully painted diesels to provide a visual delight as they labored across the landscape with increasingly shorter trains. Remembering the sounds of railroading-whistle blasts, clicking telegraph sounders, the clickity-clack of wheels on track, and the once common \"all aboard\" shouted out from a depot platform-have become less audible with the passage of the abandonment years. The echo of sounds O\u0026amp;W railroading produced are now bouncing off the distant hills so that in order to hear and remember them we must listen harder. Even the smell of railroading from passing locomotives and century-old station houses is being dispersed by the constant winds that blow across the miles of the once vibrant Ontario \u0026amp; Western main line.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv style=\"text-align:left\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family:Calibri;font-size:0.82em;color:#000000;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;text-decoration:none;\"\u003ePhotographs may be the best means of preserving the memory of the Ontario \u0026amp; Western Railway. After all, an O\u0026amp;W image produced on film by a camera is still an exact duplication of the scene exposed during the railroad's lifetime. It is tangible visual evidence that the railroad did indeed exist and labored across the landscape prior to March 29, 1957. A camera can freeze a moment in time, such as when trains called at depots or sped down a right-of-way that was foliage free. It can provide a glimpse of a station in its prime when it was the most important building in the community. Not only do photographs provide images of the railroad's life, they also trigger a mechanism in the mind that releases long dormant memories.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv style=\"text-align:left\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family:Calibri;font-size:0.82em;color:#000000;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;text-decoration:none;\"\u003eAs important as the written word, a personal remembrance, and a photograph are toward continuing the memory of the New York, Ontario \u0026amp;\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv style=\"text-align:left\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family:Calibri;font-size:0.82em;color:#000000;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;text-decoration:none;\"\u003eWestern Railway individually, it is their collective power that best perpetuates the railroad's memory. Using them and employing a degree of imagination, dare I say daydreaming, we can accurately recreate the life and heritage of this once proud and vibrant railroad. Not only for those diminishing number of persons who remember the O\u0026amp;W, but as an introduction to those people who were not fortunate to have known the road.
