The engine terminal at South Amboy, N. J., on October 23, 1976. Scuffing through the years' accumulation of sand, dust, and cinders, I step over a jumble of uprooted ties and wade through chest-high weeds. I pass aging Conrail E7's and E8's, paint peeling to juxtapose Penn Central logo and New York Central oval, elsewhere to let a bright red keystone re-emerge. The diesels look old, worn, and decrepit.
In the electrified section of the terminal are a trio of GG1's on tiptoes, "pans" outstretched to touch the catenary-raised high for safety here, as is typically the case in terminal areas. Nos. 4872 and 4874, the first two "G's" in line, wear PC black, but now carry only ludicrously small "CR's" on their spacious sides. With the early morning sun glancing obliquely from the locomotives' skins, it's easy to see the image of the Pennsylvania Railroad keystone in outline, as well as the more recently obliterated Penn Central herald.
The third GG1, No. 4883, still wears the broad yellow stripe introduced in the 1950's, and the yellow teardrops on the marker lights. She bleeds keystone red on her flanks. In spite of cosmetic blemishes, the G's still look modern and powerful. Incongruous here amid the weeds, they stand at rest; I can look at them at my leisure, note their perfect contours and overall balance.
