This is the fourth edition of the second book in a pioneer series and continues the important work of keeping this authoritative history of the railways of Great Britain up to date.
H. P. White has produced an eminently readable and highly informative account of the complex story of a region long distinguished by its preponderance of passenger traffic. His approach is to trace the currents set up by the nineteenth-century railway building, studying the interplay of cause and effect -the influence of the growth of the railway network on social, economic and physical factors, and, in turn, the changes wrought on the society, economy and landscape of the area by the presence of the railways.
This new edition, which has four extra pages of plates, has been thoroughly revised to bring the story up to the present - a time when the great potential for the development of the railways in the area is threatened by the lack of consistent planning by government. This book is even more relevant today than when first published in 1961, and should be read by every commuter and everyone interested in future planning for the South East, as well as by railway enthusiasts.
