ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
This booklet summarizes the labours and investments of a number of individuals and institutions. Selma Barkham first led Walter Kenyon, Ralph Pastore, Gerald Penney and James Tuck to the Basque whaling sites in 1977. The following year she encouraged Robert Grenier and his team from Parks Canada to search for Basque shipwrecks in Red Bay Harbour. Since that time literally hundreds of individuals have participated in the recovery and analysis of objects and information recovered from beneath the soil and waters of Red Bay.
Underwater explorations were conducted by Parks Canada's Marine Archaeology Unit. Excavations on the land were conducted by Memorial University with financial assistance from the Department of Culture, Recreation and Youth, Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, the Department of Regional Economic Expansion, Government of Canada and the National Geographic Society.
The Canadian Conservation Institute has been a partner in the land excavations since 1978 and has provided expertise and assistance in analysing, preserving and restoring the thousands of finds; Parks Canada's Conservation Division did likewise for the material recovered from underwater. Without the assistance of these two groups the excavations would have been impossible. Staff of the Zooarchaeological Identification Centre, National Museum of Natural Sciences, analysed the whale remains and other bones from the various sites.
