INTRODUCTION
Two passenger rail systems, both with unusual origins, still exist in the western suburbs of Philadelphia: one began as part of a turnpike, while the other had its beginning as part of a planned coast-to-coast railroad. Both systems, now operated by the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA), use the 69`h Street Terminal in Upper Darby as their Philadelphia terminus.
The standard-gauge third-rail operated Norristown Line runs on a grade-separated private right-of-way through the "Main Line" suburbs with a terminus in Norristown, the Montgomery County seat. The wide-gauge system operates as a suburban trolley line with termini in Sharon Hill and Media, the Delaware County seat. Both systems have been extensively rebuilt and re-equipped with new light rail vehicles (LRV's) and continue to provide a valuable service to the area.
The main emphasis of this book is on the private company rail operations from 1940 to 1970. Highlights of the SEPTA operations from 1970 to 2012 complete the story.
