Railroad fans of every description will be entranced by the rugged but artistic drawings and the wealth of technical information contained in this fascinating volume. In fact, the 1886 RECENT LOCOMOTIVES contains more detail about individual locomotives than appears in any book before or since.
The material had been published previously on a periodical basis by the Railroad Gazette. In 1883 some of the Railroad Gazette information was compiled as the first RECENT LOCOMOTIVES book. This book proved so valuable to locomotive builders and maintenance engineers that a greatly enlarged 1886 edition was published to include 50 locomotives that had been built since 1882, and 300 additional engravings not included in the 1883 book. The total content was actually doubled. Included are all the major locomotives in use in the United States in 1886, plus some British and European equipment.
It's easy to see how the power and strength of the colorful steam locomotives of the 1880's got into the blood of every American boy and started a fascination with steam that continues today among the country's thousands of rail fans. In these pages is the genesis of this passion for railroading, from picturesque small engines to the powerful Consolidateds and compounds that were appearing on the scene.
