Scenery and scenic effects are to a model railroad what petals are to a flower. Granted, you can minimize or remove the petals and still have the base or the heart of the flower, but its appearance will be stark, diminished in effect, and devoid of essence. The same concept prevails in true model railroading where one wishes to approach and emulate exacting realism. Take away scenic backdrops, mountains, tunnels, terrain, trees, foliage, and water, and you have a static tabletop toy train setup in which the rolling stock goes round and round, through a number of switches effectively-but not realistically. Surround your mechanical aspects of the railroad with good basic or even simplified scenery and you are approaching state-of-the-art realism, which is what true model railroading is all about.
Most railroad model buffs who have tackled and overcome more complex engine kit and rolling stock kit building (as well as complicated electrical work) will find scenic and visual effect construction a breeze-so simplified that even the
beginner can be rewarded on basic initial ventures.
The processes and techniques explored and delineated within the forthcoming pages are within the capabilities of the average person. Various approaches and materials utilized will be old hat to some, but their applications may be varied and novel. The techniques illustrated are basically my own, but I'm sure many individuals can expand on them, creating unique personal effects. A lot of my approaches evolved by studying the work of some of the masters, namely John Allen and Bill McClanahan.
All the working materials recommended and presented may be readily obtained by visiting the local hobby or art supply house. If none are in the local area, try mail order.
You will find that inclusion of basic do-it-yourself scratchbuilt scenery will be inexpensive as well as rewarding, expanding the realistic aspect of the pike whether small and concise or large and panoramic.
