The "Pennsylvania Traction Series" is dedicated to preserving and recording the history of the age of the trolley in Pennsylvania.
At its height, the READING TRANSIT's trolleys extended from Palmyra in the west to the Roxborough-Manayunk-Wissahickon sections of the city of Philadelphia on the east - a distance of over 75 miles. Its trolley lines served four counties, namely Lebanon, Berks, Montgomery and Philadelphia, in Eastern Pennsylvania.
Although not as glamourous as the Lehigh Valley Transit, Reading trolleys provided frequent dependable transportation, with a wide variety of cars, ranging from single truck dinkeys to large heavy interurbans, for a period of 77 years.
Today there are few traces of the Reading trolleys; however, here and there rails peek through street paving, and a few car bodies, used as sheds, etc. remain.
However, the pleasant memory of a trolley system that faithfully served Eastern Pennsylvania residents will always be remembered by former riders, and we hope this book rekindles such memories, and introduces the trolley to those who were born to late to enjoy a trolley ride.
Herewith, then, is a brief backward look - by word and picture - into the time of the trolley. We hope that this volume will bring you as much pleasure as its preparation has to the authors.
