Central Railroad of New Jersey version limited edition #68 of 500
Between July of 1929 and July of 1930, the first Central Railroad of New Jersey (CNJ) employee publication was printed under the name of the Jersey Central News Magazine. To combat the Great Depression, the Reading Railroad and the CNJ combined their operations, and by joint effort, an employee magazine was once again published beginning in June of 1936 under the name of the Reading Jersey Central Magazine. CNJ employees were once again without a magazine when the Reading Railroad dissolved the partnership after the September 1943 issue. March of 1944 saw the rebirth of the CNJ employee magazine, with the first publication of The Coupler. In October of 1954 after 10 years of publication, the magazine's name was changed to Jersey Central LINES. Ten years later, the employee magazine again went through a name change. Jersey Central Lines Newsliners, first published in June of 1964, was published on a sporadic basis until April of 1972. Between May of 1975 and February of 1976, the employee publication was revived once again under the name of The Coupler. April 1, 1976 marked the formation of ConRail and the end of the Central Railroad of New Jersey.
