A full volume for each logging company! Historical treasures, anecdotes, and interviews with those who made America's Pacific Northwest logging operations a unique slice of railroadiana. The entire set is lavishly illustrated with maps, drawings, and previously unpublished photos. A specially commissioned full-color painting jackets each handsome volume.
Author, artist, and rail buff James Spencer, a native of the Northwest, debuts the series with the fascinating Rayonier operations. Detailing the heydey of steam, when trains ran daily out of Railroad Camp, near Hoquiam, Washington, and through the treacherous Clallam Branch, near the Strait of Juan de Fuca, RAYONIER follows the saga of a young man in search of gold, who built a logging empire eventually to become part of the ITT conglomerate. Illustrating much of the text with priceless turn-of-the-century glass-plate photos from the Rayonier archives, Mr. Spencer also contributes many photos from diverse personal collections, as well as some of his own drawings and the original oil painting of Rayonier locomotives featured on the dust jacket. Some of Rayonier's old train crews "tell it like it was" as they augment the text with their own commentaries.
