In einem Buch in Wort und Bild die Dampf-schneeschleudern der Schweizer Bahnen fest-zuhalten, ist deshalb hochst aktuell, weil vom groBen Dampfloksterben nun auch diese Son-dergattung von dampfbetriebenen Maschinen erfaBt wurde. Fiir jedermann mit Auge und Sinn fiir imposante technische Erscheinungs-formen war eine schwer arbeitende Dampf-schneeschleuder inmitten der tiefverschneiten Bergwelt ein mindestens so eindriickliches Er-lebnis, wie es etwa die allergroBten amerikani-schen Dampflokomotiven im iiberlasteten Ein-satz bedeuten. Der Autor behandelt gestrafft die Entwicklungsgeschichte der Dampfschnee-schleuder, die Arbeitsweise der Schneerium-mittel, die Meteorologic des SchweizerWinters, die hauptsichlichsten Arten der Schneebehin-derung bei den Bahnen und dann vor allem die Dampfschneeschleudern der Lotschbergbahn, der Gotthardbahn und der Rhatischen Bahn, unter besonderer Beriicksichtigung des Raum-betriebes bei der Berninabahn. Neben prach-tigen und seltenen Bildern enthalt das Buch in technischen Schnittzeichnungen und Tabellen instruktive Unterlagen fur den eisenbahntech-nisch interessierten Laien.Ein reiches Literatur-verzeichnis gibt wertvolle Hinweise auf dieses spezielle Gebiet. Immer, wenn im Winter der Sturm in riesigen Mengen Schnee verfrachtet, wenn die Lawinen ihr Zerstorungswerk voll-bringen, dann ist es Zeit fiir den Einsatz der Dampfschneeschleuder und ihrer Bedienungs-mannschaft, die, von ihren Mitmenschen kaum je gesehen, in Nacht und Nebel fur unser aller Wohl tatig ist. Es war an der Zeit, aus AnlaB des Ausscheidens und Ersatzes durch moder-nere dieselelektrische Einheiten der Dampf-schneeschleuder dieses kleine Denkmal zu setzen.

To record the steam snow blowers of the Swiss railways in words and pictures in a book is therefore highly topical, because the great death of steam locomotives has now also affected this special type of steam-powered machines. For everyone with an eye and a sense for imposing technical appearances, a hard-working steam snow blower in the middle of the snow-covered mountains was at least as impressive an experience as the very large American steam locomotives in heavy use. The author deals in a concise manner with the history of the development of the steam snow blower, the mode of operation of the snow sluice agents, the meteorology of the Swiss winter, the most important types of snow obstruction on the railways and then above all on the steam snow blowers of the LRailway, the Gotthard Railway and the Rhaetian Railway, with special consideration of the space operation of the Bernina Railway. In addition to promising and rare pictures, the book contains instructive documents in technical sectional drawings and tables for the layman interested in railway technology. Whenever in winter the storm transports huge quantities of snow, when the avalanches accomplish their work of destruction, then it is time for the use of the steam snow blower and its operating team, which, hardly ever seen by their fellow human beings, is active in the night and fog for the welfare of all of us. It was time to erect this small monument to the retirement and replacement by more modern diesel-electric units of the steam snow blower.
