Railways To-Day By J W Williamson Hard Cover 1938, 1946
Railways To-Day By J W Williamson Dust Jacket 1938, reprinted 1946 160 Pages
In spite of the increasing significance of air travel, there is little likelihood that railways will lose the important position which they hold to-day. In this new edition of Railways To-Day, Mr Williamson, a great authority on our railway system and a friend and colleague of the late Sir Josiah Stamp, is a sturdy exponent of the many advantages of the permanent way. His aim is to give " a clear exposition of how and why a railway works." After a brief historical survey he goes on to describe the progress that has been made all over the world, dealing more particularly with the railways in Great Britain. He discusses the many aspects of the construction, maintenance and control of locomotives, rolling stock and the railways generally.
There is a new preface on the railways in Britain since they have become nationalized, and some new plates have been added.
