0. S. Nock is perhaps the best-known writer on railways today, and in Railways of Western Europe he takes the reader on a conducted tour of those European railway systems he has personally travelled and researched. The journey takes the form of a largely continuous route, starting with the sea crossing from Harwich to the Hook of Holland, and continues through the Netherlands, Belgium and Northern France, dealing with the history, construction, locomotives, signaling, modern engineering and development of the railways along the way. After no more than a 'whistle-stop' in Paris, the journey continues eastward on the route of the Orient Express into Germany, through the Rhineland, and southward into Austria. On arrival in Alpine country, Mr Nock describes the wonderful electric railways of Switzerland and the great north to south mountain routes, then moves on into Italy, southwards from Milan as far as Naples. From this furthest point, the route leads back along the Cote d'Azur, and explores the great Paris, Lyons and Mediterranean system. The journey reaches its climax, appropriately, with the Paris-Orleans Railway, on which some of the world's greatest steam locomotive engineering was achieved, and where now several electric trains run daily at 200 km/h.
